Eleven types of communities in which Nardus stricta occurs were distinguished and mapped in the alpine zone of the Hrubý Jeseník Mts. The future success of Nardus stricta coenopopulations in these communities depends on disturbances which keep the grassland canopy open and thus make the seedling establishment possible. At present, such favourable conditions occur only in about 1 % of the mapped area. In other communities, either the emergence of seedlings is exceptional or their survival is low.
